Before we talk about where to eat or which trail to take, I want you to know what makes this part of Tucson so special.
Here, the mountains shape the backdrop, the roads follow the land, and architecture has a conversation with the desert. That sense of place is one of the first things I want you to experience when you arrive.
Rudy Ruiz
St. Philip’s in the Hills · Josias Joesler’s enduring architectural legacy.
The Murphey–Joesler vision
Developer John W. Murphey, his wife Helen, and Swiss-born architect Josias Joesler helped shape the Foothills’ modern identity. Murphey acquired a large tract north of River Road in 1928. Their vision brought together generous lots, desert vegetation, mountain views and architecture rooted in the Southwest.
Construction of Catalina Foothills Estates began in 1935. Joesler’s Spanish Colonial Revival influences and Helen’s attention to interiors and Mexican craftsmanship helped give the area its enduring character. St. Philip’s in the Hills, completed in 1936, remains an accessible landmark of that story.
A deeper look at the history
This is one chapter in a much longer regional story. Tucson’s Indigenous connections predate these subdivisions. University of Arizona archives also document exclusionary restrictions in early development—a fuller history acknowledges that legacy alongside the architecture.
A table with a view. A new morning ritual. A favorite place you haven’t found yet.
